West Gippsland Stalwarts Honoured by Australian Government

Robert ("Chairman Bob") Taylor, George Glasscock, Robert Hansen and Jeff Wallace are well respected in West Gippsland for their fine contributions over many years to country cricket. Recently they were also honoured by the Federal Government.

The four were recipients of Australian Sports Medals, which were awarded for "those who have made a significant contribution to sport as a player, administrator or umpire", VCA secretary Ken Jacobs describes this honour as having "the same status as other awards in the Federal Honours system", which makes them most prestigious awards.

All who are associated with West Gippsland cricket congratulate the four recipients on their much deserved honour, and for the benefit of local followers their major local cricket achievements are listed below.

Robert Taylor

  • Current WGCA Chairman 1994-present.

  • WGCA Life member 1999.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club Vice president 1985- 87, 1998- 2000.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club player 1985- 1999 145 games, 3,400 runs.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club Premierships 1986, 1987, 1988.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club centuries- 1987, 1997.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club junior coach 1988-1990.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Recreation Reserve Committee president 1992-2000.

  • Pakenham Cricket Club 2nd X1 captain 1977-78,

  • Pakenham Cricket Club Premiership 1976.

George Glasscock

  • A continuous player with Kooweerup between 1955- 89. before retiring as a player at the age of 51.

  • Participated in seven A Grade Premierships and the team never missed a finals series.

  • Regularly captained Kooweerup.

  • Coached Kooweerup junior teams to two premierships.

  • Life Membership of Kooweerup Cricket Club.

  • Represented WGCA at Melbourne Country Week on many occasions.

  • A winner of WGCA batting and bowling averages, and WGCA bowling aggregate.

  • Member of WGCA Executive for ten years.

  • President of WGCA 1980-1984.

  • WGCA Life Membership 1985.

  • Currently Chairman of WGCA Tribunal.

  • WGCA Secretary 1973- 1985.

  • WGCA Life Member, 1985.

  • WGCA Junior Cricket Director 1993-94.

  • Author and Publisher of "A Century Partnership", which documents the history of the club & township of Upper Beaconsfield.

  • Pakenham Cricket Club player 1968-1971, 1979-1982.

  • Berwick Cricket Club player 1973-1976.

  • Berwick Cricket Club captain, A grade 1976.

  • Beaconsfield Cricket Club Coach 1977.

  • Beaconsfield Cricket Club player 1977-1978

  • Officer Cricket Club player 1983

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club player 1984- 1999, 204 games, 376 wickets.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club captain, 1st X1 1984- 1987, 3rd x1 1995- 1997.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club premierships 1985, 1986.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club coach 1986.

  • Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club Junior coach 1991-1999.

  • Current Level III cricket coach through Cricket Australia.

  • Initiated the L J Hooker West Gippsland Cricket Show on 97.7FM Casey Radio 2001

  • Current Host & Producer of the L J Hooker West Gippsland Cricket Show

  • Played and captained St. Andrews Cricket Club in the Warragul District Cricket Association 1971-73.

  • Coached Warragul District junior teams.

  • Captain Dandenong Cricket Club 1975-78.

  • WGCA Umpire 1973-1997.

  • President WGCA Umpires 1995-97.

  • Secretary WGCA 1996-2006

  • WGCA Life Member, 2005.

  • During his career as a primary teacher in the Benalla and Wangaratta areas, Jeff was an outstanding player, captain, coach and administrator.

  • He was made a Life Member of the Wangaratta District Cricket Association in 1970.
